Community Gleaning and Wildcrafter’s Guild with Katherine

Join Spoonful Herbal’s Katherine Elmer in 2024 to pilot a “Community Gleaning and Wildcrafting Guild” program, hosting guest instructors from the community and interacting with various locations including Shelburne Farms, the Intervale and Rock Point.

Participants in the program will be invited to join 2 wildcrafting or gleaning outings per month, which will include hands-on instruction in ecology, plant identification and processing.

DIY Plant Remedy Making Series with Kara

Join Spoonful Herbal’s Kara Buchanan in 2024 to pilot her new “DIY Remedy Making Series”, offering multiple, in-person opportunities to learn all the basic herbal preparation techniques, using all available menstruums: water, vinegar, honey, alcohol, glycerine, oil, and the many formulas that can be made from them, such as syrups, oxymels, salves, lotions, and blending tinctures. DIY kits and plant material will be available for purchase to follow up your learning and allow you to create your own beautiful, high quality medicine!

These classes will be co-taught by members of our Herbalist Mentorship Community.

University of Vermont: Plant Based Healing Medicine

Offered online during the summer and fall through the University of Vermont, this 3 credit course is open to members of the community as well as degree students enrolled through UVM.

Students explore the historical perspectives of Herbalism, as well as its present-day context within both the realms of complementary/integrative and Western allopathic biomedical medicines. The sustainable harvesting, preparation, and storage of herbs are covered, in addition to specific herbs as support for specific organs or systems of the body. Students will practice plant medicine making in their own homes using materials provided in a “home lab kit” shipped to students. A virtual “weed walk” to view medicinal plants growing on the UVM campus is included. Guest speakers include area herbalists, gardeners, activists and integrative health practitioners.
